It's wintertime in Germany and temperatures can range from 15°C to minus 10°C. So it can be sunny and warm or cold with snowstorms. Be well prepared and have some warm clothing and shoes in your luggage.
”Fasching” means carnival and has a long tradition in Germany. You can compare it to Halloween in the USA, but it’s supposed to be funny and not scary. In Germany’s North West it is celebrated very excessively (Cologne, Mainz, etc.). The RTSF is taking place right at the big final weekend of “Fasching”. That means that you probably will meet quite a bunch of strange looking people in the city centre, wearing all kinds of masquerade and behaving a bit weird. If you like to join these disguised people, you can do that already on Thursday - that day is also known as “Unsinniger Donnerstag” or “Altweiberfasching” (guys - be careful, because on that particular day the ladies are allowed to cut your ties - honestly!). If you stay till Tuesday (“Faschingsdienstag”) you can attend the colourful carnival revelry in the city with a lot of dancing and parties all over Munich. If you like carnival processions than Monday ("Rosenmontag”) is your day!
The venues at the RTSF have nothing to do with the carnival itself or that kind of masquerade. We might have some theme parties at certain nights and will invite you to contribute with your outfit to the motto of the nights.
The past years we had participants from the following countries at the RTSF: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Norway, Russia, Scotland, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA.
General information you could use on your way to Munich, we have collected in a PDF-file (emergency call number, tourist information, important phone numbers etc.) which you can find in the download section. Detailed information about the camp you will receive at the Check-In.
The Check-In is the single point of contact for all participants. All necessary information about the camp will be displayed there of which you will receive a free copy. If you have some pending questions we are happy to clarify them face-to-face. In cases of emergency during the classes you also can contact the teacher or the owner of the studios.
There is a non-smoking-law in Bavaria since 01.01.08: Smoking is not allowed in restaurants, cafés, pubs and venues. Therefore all events and venues at the RTSF will be non-smoking.
In general you need permission for handing out flyers inside the venues. Those permissions can be purchased at WOS. For the distribution of flyers on the Friday night venue a fee will apply. You also have the opportunity to advertise in the RTSF playbill or book an enclosure. On Saturday, Sunday and Monday night there will be an extra table where you can display your flyers.
Yes! For sure we will have one at the Sugar Foot Stomp at the Alte Messe on Saturday Night. For the other days we're still searching for a suitable place. We’ll let you know as soon as we’ve found one.
Sure. There are specific beginner classes in Boogie Woogie, Lindy Hop, and Balboa, which consist of three single built-up classes that will instruct you step by step. In those classes you’ll learn the necessary foundation (footwork and basic elements) for the particular dance. Those are essential to continue with a beginners-intermediate class.
There will be classes in Boogie Woogie, Lindy Hop, Balboa, Shag, Charleston and Burlesque. Additionally there will be special lessons for further swing related or non-swing related dances and about specific topics (e.g. acrobatics, competition, line dances, tap etc.)
For the main dances (Boogie Woogie, Lindy Hop and Balboa) there will be five categories offered: Beginner, Beginner/Intermediate, Intermediate, Advanced, and Competition. Please take the class descriptions into consideration before you make your choices of class and level. In general applies the following:
a) No experience necessary for beginner classes.
b) The minimum requirement for the beginner/intermediate classes (Shag is the exception, because the basics will be covered in the first lesson) are the basic fundamentals as e.g. taught in the beginner classes .
c) To join the intermediate classes you should be dancing for a while, be absolutely confident in your basics and in leading & following of some variations.
d) For an advanced class you should be dancing on a high level for a longer time already or have joined several championships. Your steps and variations are routine and you are up for new challenges. You can dance hassle-free and fluently to slow and fast music. You’d like to improve the quality of your movements, your musicality, and the finesse of your lead.
e) The competition classes are designed for already competing couples or couples who want to compete in the future. Partners are required!
f) Kids: On Sunday and on Monday there will be a kids track for the first time. The minimum age is 8 years.
Yes, you can. The only exceptions are the acrobatic and the competition classes: These classes can only be attended with a partner.
Each class has an own topic and is completed. Only the beginner classes build up on each other. That means that if you don’t have any experience in this dance, it won't be possible to start with the second or third lesson without having done the first one of the beginner track.
Yes, you can. Classes can be chosen freely on site. But please be smart and take your own level in consideration. Your choice of classes at the registration is just a guideline for us to assign the classes to the size of the studios.
By now we haven't faced that problem. It could happen that certain classes will be overfilled if too many participants decide spontaneous at once to go to the same class. That's why it is important that you let us know what classes you plan to join (different room sizes!).
Foreign teachers will teach in English. Due to the international participation, the German speaking teachers will teach either in English, German or in both languages. Some teachers might speak several languages (e.g. Italian, French, Spanish, Swedish, and Norwegian).
The instructors will ask you to rotate partners (exception: no rotation in acrobatic classes and competition classes). In general the rotation has a lot of advantages: more flexibility, improvement of your lead & follow, inspiration by others, to learn and benefit from each other, to meet new people and therefore having more dance partners in the evening to dance with. (Don't you think those are enough reasons to rotate?)
Even we highly recommend to change partners in classes, we also understand, if couples don't want to change because they want to spend their time together during the camp. The instructors will then split the participants in two groups, so non-rotating couples won’t interrupt the rotation of the others. But if the relation of leaders and followers are not balanced, that means if we have too many leaders or followers, then we have to ask all participants to rotate.
Each acrobatic class is limited to 15 couples. The subscription for the actual day has to be done each morning starting at 9:00 am at the Check-In counter. First come, first served!
Train the Trainer classes concentrate on the “HOW” and not on the “WHAT”. They are specifically designed to the needs of instructors. Basically everybody can participate who is interested in those kinds of classes. Due to the English speaking instructors and to be able to follow the theoretical stuff and thematic discussions, it is an advantage to have sufficient knowledge in the English language.
On Sunday the classes are designed to kids at the age of 8 to 11 and on Monday to kids/teenagers from 12-15.
The check-in counter is located at (TBA).

We probably will offer you sandwiches, fruit, sweets and beverages in some studios. Some studios also have their own bars where you can buy coffee and other stuff (e.g. Taktlücke, Que Tango, etc.). More information will be provided in your participation letters that you will receive at the Check-In.
Basically yes! But please make sure that you take your left overs and rubbish away before you leave the studio. The studios have to be left in clean condition!
Yes, you still can register last-minute at the Check-In.
Due to the feedback forms of the last years we have obtained that two desires of the participants are in the foreground: a longer lunch break and more preparation time for the evenings. For that reason we have reduced the classes to 60 minutes. The resulting price advantage we have passed on to you.
Yes, you can book single days.
Yes, you can. The price for the extra days is depending on the already in advance booked days. If you decide last-minute to stay longer you can stock up on site at the regular price (Check-In), but you can't take advantage of any further discounts.
No, it isn't. The track will be treated like any other day..
No, you can't! The smallest booking unit is one day.
Yes, there is. Group registrations with more than 10 people will benefit from a price reduction of 10% on the dance camp. This reduction counts only if the whole group registration is done in one booking. Late registrations don't apply for that discount!
Yes, there are discounts, but on the camp prices only (not for tickets). Pupils, students, apprentices, and recruits will get a price reduction of 15% (show your qualifying ID at the check-in) and kids will receive a 30% discount. Unfortunately there’s no price reduction for disabled people.
In general camp and ticket orders are binding and oblige acceptance and payment. The German Distance Selling Act allows normally a two week revocation period, but according to § 312b Paragraph 3 Nr. 6 BGB it is not applicable for ticket sales or camp bookings.
In case you can't experience your dance camp booking, you can transfer your place to another person without any cancellation fee.Complete cancellations of the dance camp are possible without giving reasons, but the following cancellation fees will apply:
| Cancellation | Cancellation Fee |
|---|---|
| until Jan 15th 2010 | 20% of the Camp price |
| until Jan 24th 2010 | 40% of the Camp price |
| until Feb 4th 2010 | 80% of the Camp price |
| after Feb 5th 2010 | 100% of the Camp price |
Cancellation of the evening tickets are unfortunately not possible, but you can resell your tickets to another person of your choice.
You can buy dinner at all of the dance nights.
Friday: The Deutsche Theater has an extra restaurant marquee where you can dine à la carte but also in the ballroom.
Saturday: At the Alte Messe you can dine à la carte (Bavarian kitchen) from a selected menue card in the ballroom or you can eat in the restaurant there directly. The food is very good at affordable prices.
Sunday: At the Max-Emanuel-Brauerei you always can dine à la carte.
Monday: The Kolpinghaus offers a separate restaurant on the first floor where you can have dinner à la carte. In the ballroom there’ll be a short menu only with a small choice of dishes.
Pre-RTSF-Party and After Hour Partys at the Taktlücke: No food will be served. We will provide snacks (pretzel sticks, nuts, chips etc.) for free and you can purchase drinks and beverages at the bar. Own drinks are NOT allowed to bring in!
Definitely not. All venues have their own gastronomy. Don’t be impolite!
Yes and no. As the Jamboree Ball takes place at the Deutsches Theater - a theatre ballroom - you should be dressed accordingly. Otherwise you might not be allowed to get in. The same is valid for the Alte Messe. It's a beautiful old ballroom.
In general we want to encourage you to accomplish the atmosphere of the dance nights with a stylish outfit; best would be 40s or 50s style of course. Training pants and T-shirts are meant for training and not suitable for a delightful evening.
In case you sweat a lot, your dance partners will appreciate it highly if you have extra shirts with you to change from a wet to a dry shirt.
If an evening has a certain motto it would be simply terrific if you contribute to the atmosphere of the evening with a thematic outfit.
All contests of the RTSF are open to anybody, so everybody who’d like to compete can take part. The registration will take place right at the venue of the specific night.
For all participants who arrive on Thursday already or earlier we will have a little welcome dance party at our dance school„Taktlücke am Stachus“. The Pre-RTSF-Party „In The Mood“ should get you in the right mood for the festival. The party is open to anybody.
After Bop Around The Clock (Sunday) and the Jitterbug Hop (Monday) we are going to have After Hour Partys at the Taktlücke, starting at 2:00 am until ?. If you still have energy left after the big dance nights, you can run riot there.
Admission: DJ music = 5 Euro (Live music = 10 Euro) / free admission for owner of a valid evening ticket of the relating day, e.g. free admission on Sunday if you can show your ticket for Bop Around The Clock at the door.
All tickets for the dance nights of the RTSF can be purchased at the Rock That Swing Festival Website (www.rockthatswing.com). Tickets for the Friday and Saturday venue can also be purchased at the booking agency München Ticket (www.muenchenticket.de) and the Jamboree Ball on Friday night can also be bought directly at the Deutsches Theater (www.deutsches-theater.de) (websites are in German only!). Please consider that all ticket agencies have a separate contingent of tickets. So maybe one ticket agency ran out of tickets while others are still selling. If there are any tickets left, they will be sold at the respective dance night. Discounts for tickets are only available for bookings done through the Rock That Swing Website (www.rockthatswing.com).
All tickets you have ordered directly at the Rock That Swing website can be either mailed to you or be picked up at the Check-In of the Dance Camp or at the RTSF box office at the dance nights. Tickets you have purchased at München Ticket and at Deutsches Theater, can be picked up at their specified places.
Yes! There are different levels and possibilities of price reductions: early bird, evening packages, complete packages and group discounts (10 tickets and more per evening).
Detailed price information you will find in the menu.
At past RTSFs certain events have been sold out in advance. If there are still left over tickets on-hand, they will be sold at the box offices of each dance night. Advance sales fees will not apply at the box office. You can look up the availability of tickets at www.rockthatswing.com.
Yes, but this category exists for the Sugar Foot Stomp on Saturday night at the Alte Messe only. There will be also offered some numbered seatings. The Jamboree Ball offers numbered seating only. All other venues have free seating, but seating can't be guaranteed.
Numbered seats are available for the Jamboree Ball at the Deutsches Theater and the Sugar Foot Stomp at the Alte Messe only. For all the other dance nights there’s just one price category which means you have a free choice of seating. But be early, the numbers of seats are limited. Have in mind: first come, first served!
In general ticket and camp orders are binding
and oblige acceptance and payment. The German Distance Selling Act allows normally a
two week revocation period, but according to § 312b Paragraph 3 Nr. 6 BGB it is not applicable for ticket sales or camp bookings. Ticket orders unfortunately cannot be cancelled and are NOT refundable! Of course you can resell the tickets to the person of your choice.
There are limited cancellation possibilities for the Dance Camp. For more information please click here.
The central station is close by the venues (approx. 5 minutes walking). The airport is located in the very northeast of Munich, but suburban trains (S-Bahn, S8 and S1) leave every 20 minutes and take you directly to the city centre (40-45 minutes, no change of trains).
Most venues are close by the central station (Hauptbahnhof) and the Stachus (Karlsplatz) and distances can be walked.
Friday night:
Due to restoration work of the German Theatre building the Jamboree Ball on Friday night has been moved into the Deutsches Theater-Zelt in Fröttmaning, but the new location can easily be reached by car or public transportation.
Public transportation (MVV): Take the suburban train (U6 direction Garching), entering at Marienplatz or Sendlinger Tor, and get off in "Fröttmaning" (approx. 16 min.). Take the exit "P+R-Parkhaus" and follow the underpass to the theatre tent "Deutsches Theater".
Car: Coming from Munich take the freeway (Autobahn) A 9 München - Nürnberg and exit at junction München-Fröttmaning-Süd (AS 73). There is adequate parking available for 1 Euro only.
Saturday night:
The Sugar Foot Stomp at the Alte Messe is close to the Theresienwiese (Octoberfest) and in walking distance from the central station. You also can use public transportation (U5 + U4 to Schwanthaler Höhe (2 stops after the Hauptbahnhof)) or park the car in the parking lot of the Theresienwiese. The Alte Messe is located about 100 m away. The venue itself doesn't have too many parking spots.
Sunday night (the Max-Emanuel-Brauerei can be reached in about 5 minutes from the city centre): You can either take the Trambahn (Tram 27 direction Petuelring) at Stachus/Karlsplatz and exit at Schellingstraße or Nordendstraße (Adalbertstrasse is located between these two stops, plus 3-4 minutes walk) or you take the suburban train (U6/U3 direction Münchner Freiheit) at Marienplatz or Sendlinger Tor and exit at Universität (plus approx 6-8 minutes walk). A cab from the city to the venue costs about 15 Euro. You can also try to share a car with other participants (parking spots are hard to find in this area).
Participants who arrive with their own vehicle can drive of course directly into the city. Make sure you have an emission sticker on your car! We discourage you from doing that, because the parking in the city center is very expensive (parking in parking blocks costs about 2-3 € per hour). Public parking lots are also metered and rather rare.
It's more favourable to park in the P+R parking blocks (Park & Ride). The parking costs are limited to 1 € per day and there is always public transportation (U-Bahn, S-Bahn) next to it (www.parkundride.de/m). We are working on deals with some parking blocks to get an attractive daily flat rate. In the nights some parking blocks offer a parking flat rate for 3 Euros only. The final information and recommendations will be announced in the site map.
With the exception of Saturday night (Deutsches Theater-Zelt), where you can find enough parking for just 1 €, all other venues are located in the city centre or close to (Sunday). We would recommend you to use public transportation (www.mvv-muenchen.de).
YES! In case you haven’t already noticed, you need an emission sticker to get the permission to drive with your car into the environmental zone of Munich. This zone ranges over the whole city area within the Mittlerer Ring. If you are travelling by car the following links may be helpful for you:
http://www.tuev-sued.de/auto_fahrzeuge/feinstaub-plakette/feinstaubplakette_ausland/england
http://www.muenchen.de/Rathaus/tourist_office/service/249986/Emissions_Stickers.html
The stickers are available at all TÜV and DEKRA offices, car dealers, vehicle registration offices, and some car repair shops. You need the registration paper of your car (a copy is OK). It takes about 5 minutes and costs between 5 € and 7,50 €.
It doesn‘t affect you if you are only coming to the Jamboree Ball at the Deutsches Theater, because the theatre is located outside of the Mittlerer Ring!
All venues except Max-Emanuel-Brauerei (Sunday night, Schwabing) and the Deutsche Theater-Zelt (Saturday night, Fröttmaning) are located in the centre of Munich and very close to the Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) and the Stachus (Karlsplatz). There’s a large number of hotels close by. Early birds generally get cheaper prices. Good offers can be found at www.hotels.de and www.muenchen.citysam.de. Real cheap accommodation in groups (up to 8 people a room) is offered by www.easypalace.de.
Unfortunately we can't offer or guarantee private accommodation. If we get requests we will try to pass them on, but there is no guarantee that somebody has a private sleeping place to offer.
You can film without tripods during the evening events. If some bands don't like to be recorded they will let you know. Our RTSF DVDs of the evening events will contain impressions, performances, contests and jams. So, why not enjoy the dances without heavy arms from the camera and purchase a DVD set?
On behalf of the teachers it's still not allowed to film the whole class, but every participant can record the recap at the end of the class with the own camera if the teachers agree. Please don't publish the recordings on the internet (YouTube etc.) as after the camp we will produce the camp DVD with the summary of the classes (no "Train The Trainer" classes). Camp bookings with 3-4 days include a free camp DVD. Against payment of the shipping costs we will send you the DVD when it's ready (4 Euro inside Germany, 7,50 Euro outside Germany). You also have the possibility to purchase the DVD.
Yes, there will be RTSF 2010 DVDs available: a Camp and an evening DVD package. If you order them together with your registration you will get them for a discounted price.
There will be two DVD packages. The camp package holds the abstracts of the classes and the evening package holds impressions, performances, contests and jams. The camp package (no "Train The Trainer" classes) and the evening package will contain both 2-3 DVDs.
The Camp DVDs will have short abstracts of all classes if possible (no "Train The Trainer" classes).
If you order the Festival DVDs with your registration you can get them for a discounted price. Orders at the Festival or afterwards will cost the regular price. Late orders can be done through the RTSF website or the WOS website.
The experience of the last years has shown us that we can't say an exact date. We will inform you in time through a newsletter and the website about the procedure, when they will be ready and where you can order them. We promise that we will work hard and as fast as we can!!! The Camp-DVDs will be available earlier than the Evening-DVDs. We plan between 1-3 months to have everything ready.
