The Bands

On our video page you can find some clips of this year's bands. Have fun watching.

Stompy Jones (USA)

Stompy JonesStompy Jones is a San Francisco based sextet that was former known as "Swing Session". They are renowned for their jumpin' rhythm, wailing improvisations, hip charm, retro style, and explosive stage show. We know Stompy Jones for many years and they always have been one of our very favorite bands. Their CDs are some of the best and finest recordings known. After trying it twice before, we are very glad that it finally worked out to get them to Munich.

Each member of the band is a fabulous musician. Little David Rose's thumpin' stand-up bass, the double-shuffle drumming of Lee Beary, and the bounce piano of Scott Lawrence provide the rhythmic foundation of the band's jump style. Riffing on top is the trumpet sound of Robert Dehlinger and Erv Ervin on the saxophone. These two fellas create the fireworks of vintage Rhythm 'n' Blues. The charming Christopher Binnings' soulful vocals have become a trademark of Stompy Jones.

Little David has endeavored to recreate historic sounds of greats as Louis Jordan, Roy Milton, Joe Liggins, or T-Bone Walker, as well as, to combine these vintage elements with a contemporary sensibility, to craft the solid sound of Stompy Jones. Whether appearing at a posh supper club, concert hall, festival or cozy tavern, these journeymen of jump deliver the romping, joyous, overwhelming style of Jazz and Rhythm 'n' Blues!

If you ever had the chance to witness the bands version of "Hand Clapping" and seeing Erv wailing the saxophone you will never forget it. Starting with the dance crowd in LA it became a tradition that Erv has to play the song twice. So don't miss this band and start practicing the clapping of your hands. You will need it!

On their website you can check out and download some songs of their latest album "That's Alright". They will stick in your ears and your feet won't stop to tap anymore.

The Carling Family is playing jazz that has evolved from Hot Jazz, Dixieland, Chicago, New Orleans, and Swing to Bebop and 60s Jazz. Cherry Casino & The Gamblers (Berlin, Germany)

Cherry CasinoThe Band was put together in spring 2001 as a backing band for american singer/50's recording artist Rayburn Anthony. Axel Praefcke and Ike Stoye soon found the right guys to make this project happen. With Michael "Humpty" Kirscht on second lead-guitar, "Lucky" Lehmann on stand-up bass and Torsten "Bam-Boom" Peukert on drums they would try to get it going. Just a few days before the tour the whole thing was cancelled and there stood a well-rehearsed band with nothing to do...

"We didn't wanna leave it this way after all the practicing and the countless hours of rehearsing" says Ike "and somehow everything we played sounded kinda good!" Good ol' Rayburn wasn't there so we changed our set and did some new material instead. We tried that early R&B thing and BANG! there we were!

Here comes Jerry!
Cherry Casino and the Gamblers made their first public appearance in august 2002 on the famous „Brandenburg- Weekender“ in Werder/Berlin and went down very well. The Boys have built up a huge following of fans, all over Europe. Constant touring, and their dynamic live stage show has won Cherry Casino a huge legion of devoted fans. Five funny faces break the ice in less than a second every time they appear with their well blended mix of early R&B and furious Rock and Roll. In the meanwhile the recorded two fantastic albums and have been one of the headliners at the Summer Jamboree in Senigallia 2008. Especially Axels self-written songs go immediately into your blood and already feel so familiar when you hear them the first time as you would listen to an old classic.

Here's what Jerry likes ...
The band plays classic 1950's Rhythm and Blues and Rock and Roll with catchy lyrics and hard driving guitar/sax lead breaks and is trying to come as close as possible to the magic sounds of the era. Cherry loves T-Bone Walker,Wynonie Harris,Joe Turner and all kinds of mirrors.

The Round Up Boys (Berlin, Germany)

Round Up BoysThe Round Up Boys were founded in 1995 and have developed a unique style and sound. They play classic 1950s music with forceful beats and a raging stage show.

The four cats, Michael “Humpty” Kirscht (vocal/guitar), Torsten Peukert (drums), “Lucky” Lehmann (upright bass), and Axel Praefcke (guitar) are Germany’s best known interpretation of a 1957 High School Band.

Their sound is the music of the hipsters and teenagers. It’s music about “going steady” and “making love”. It’s the big beat of the era!

From 1999 on, Berlin’s hottest Rockabilly outfit started to play in countless clubs all over Germany and on international stages all over Europe, e.g. England (Hemsby Weekender, Rockabilly Rave – together with Huelyn Duvall), tours through Sweden and Finland, Switzerland, Spain, and The Netherlands.

Besides touring through the countries and recording their own records and CDs, in 2006 they have been studio musicians for recording sessions with stars as Rayburn Anthony (USA), Charlie Gracie (USA), Hillbilly Preachers (CRO), Rockin’ Henri Smeets (NL), Jason Lee Wilson (USA) and others.

2007 promised to become an interesting year for the Round Up Boys: They have made their first USA tour.

Most of the songs they play have been composed and written by the band itself (mainly Axel Praefcke and Michael “Humpty” Kirscht). It’s hard to hear a difference between a song that was written in the 1950’s and from the band nowadays – just amazing!

Tom & The Krauts (Rosenheim, Germany)

Tom & The Krauts„Rock’n Roll is here to stay“  this line from a  Danny & The Juniors  song was choosen for their motto when „The Krauts“ decided to form a real fifties style Rock’n Roll Band in 2000. Inspired by  the legendary outfit of Bill Haley & His Comets they bought checkered sports coats and changed their instruments into real fifties style stuff. Then they listed their favourite songs from the fifties and started exercising.

In january 2001 they were ready for rockin‘ their hometown and since then they‘ve never stopped to tour through clubs and ballrooms in bavaria .
Playing the hits of the early american Rock’n Roll Stars such as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry and of course Bill Haley the band revived the age of  petticoats, crew cuts and ducktails. German and italian tunes and swing and doowop numbers are also part of their show.

Featuring a number of at least four different leadsingers and several voices doing the chorus, Tom & The Krauts offer an enter- taining  variety of dance music.
Their delight in playing and their love for  style and outfit of the fifties is still the big incentive for  this band.

Tom – Thomas Brüderl (vocals and front man)
Maria Deiss (solo and chorus vocals)
Michael Jell (piano, guitar, vocals)
Sepp Schneider (drums, guitar, vocals)
Johannes Wienberg (saxophone)

The Souvenirs (Munich, Germany)

The SouvenirsClose your eyes and imagine:  there is Humphrey Bogart who is “swingin’ in the rain” with Edith Piaf – there is Glenn Miller playing his “Puttin’ in the Ritz”, while Fred Astaire taps in his well-known style to the Caribbean Sea – and there is Marilyn Monroe singing with Louis Armstrong his wonderful “Satchmo’s Lullaby”……

All these are beautiful souvenirs – poignant memories of the swing-era which will be performed on stage with fun and charm by Doro (upright bass), Martin (guitar), and Bernie (sax, clarinet).

The band was founded on a hot and humid summer afternoon in the Munich pedestrian zone in 1987 and since then they tour in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

They present Swing and Jazz of the 30s and 40s, but also selected music titles of the 50s until nowadays find access in their program. Sometimes nicely in the background, sometimes nippy and amused, the souvenirs present their program in clubs and pubs, at street festivals, cabaret stages, and cultural houses as well as at numerous private parties. It’s handmade music which will be presented on stage with a lot of fun and humor. The audience will be very surprised about the funny parodies of well-known jazz and entertainment stars. Bernie entertaining handling of his clarinet creates a lax atmosphere. From the first beat on, you will feel being transferred back into the real “swing-era” of the swinging thirties. After that you will be “swinging” on your way back home!

Hans-Martin Hünemörder (bandleader, guitar, vocals) has a classical education on the violoncello, and played in various Jazz and Dixieland ensembles (upright bass, cello) during his school years. During his studies he performed at the piano, guitar, and upright bass and was singing at the Munich Music Cabaret “Chapeau Claque”. After that he was educated in singing with focus on jazz. He is singer, pianist, and guitar player in various bands of the Munich scene. With the “Souvenirs” he is very appreciated as “Marilyn”.

Dr. Dorothea Hünemörder (upright bass) has learned to play the upright bass as a creative balance to her studies for veterinary medicine.

Bernhard Vaughan Rusted (clarinet, sax, vocals) grew up in Dover and London. He studied the clarinet in school. Later he toured as a street and club musician in London, Paris and Munich. He was a founding member of the Souvenirs and is very well-known and popular for his elusory real “Satchmo” sound.

Swinging Ladies DeLuxe (Österreich)

Swingin' Ladies DeluxeWith Miss Regina, an adorable singer and Miss Betty, a charismatic pianist, two thoroughbred musicians have met each other. Supported by master bass player Mister DeLuxe they revive the music of the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s.

The repertoire of the Swinging Ladies DeLuxe goes from the Comedian Harmonists ("Mein kleiner grüner Kaktus") to the Andrews Sisters ("Rum and Coca Cola") and up to Harry Belafonte’s "Banana Boat Song" and true-to-style own compositions.
They will take you for a ramble through the 40s and 50s with worldwide known songs as "Bei mir bist Du scheen" or "Rum and Coca Cola" from the Andrews Sisters, "That’s Amore" from Dean Martin, Swing and Jive classics from Doris Day, Jane Russell, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Louis Prima, Nat King Cole and many other stars.

Miss Regina alias Regina Hebein: Vocals, Saxophone, Guitar

It’s said that Regina could sing before she even could talk. Flute, guitar, violin, piano and saxophone lessons rounded up her classical vocal studies (coloratura soprano). With 25 she changed over to Schlager music, Swing, and Boogie of the 50s and became so enthusiastic about, that she left the classical music behind her for good. Since many years she is part of the famous bands "Schurli & Die Motorbienen" and "Girly & The Blue Caps". She also was engaged as a background singer for Wolfgang Ambros.

Conclusion: Music is Reginas elixir of life and her perfectionism drives not only Betty crazy. She is the jazziest appearance since Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell.

Miss Betty alias Barbara Jascht: Piano, Vocals, Tap Dance

Betty studied Piano as concert subject until 1988 at the Brucknerkonservatorium in Linz. She was addicted to Swing and Boogie Woogie already from her childhood on. It was only a matter of time when she stopped to play classical music and moved to Vienna to start her career in the Swing world. From 1990-1992 she was member of the band "Jive Giants" and from 1993 (until end of 2001) she became band leader of "Five in Love with Betty". With that band she made her name throughout Europe. Since beginning of 2003 she has a new swing and jive band named "Betty’s Swingclub". With that band she had had again great national and international success..

Conclusion: Betty is an absolut swing freak and hopeless devoted to the flair of the 40s. She loves to wear imitated Leopard.

Mister DeLuxe alias Wolfgang Hering: Upright Bass

Wolfgang studied at the academy of music in Vienna and made his years of travel and didactic with "Liederlich Spielleut" and many other bands. From 1990-1994 he was engaged as a bass player for "Andy Lee Lang" and from 1995 on he was successfully on the road with "Schurli & Die Motorbienen". 1996 he changed to "Girly & The Blue Caps" and since 2003 he plays for "Betty's Swing Club". Wolfgang is a Jive bass player of the first hour.

Conclusion: Wolfgang is not to get worked up!

The band normally performs as a trio, but if desired they can also be engaged as a quartet or sextet.
The program – Swing’s guaranteed! Music and Entertainment pure!

The DJs

H. Musicbox (Kolbermoor, Germany)

DJ Helmut "H. Musicbox"DJ Helmut Müller (Kolbermoor / Rosenheim), born in the heyday of the Rock ’n’ Roll era, fell in love with this infectious and unique sound not until the end of the 70s when he was first dancer and then president of a Rock ’n’ Roll Club.

Yet, he discovered his enthusiasm and talent for public DJing, not until 1999 when he was DJ at the summer party at a tennis club. With only a small collection of CDs but the right choice of music, he managed to lure the audience onto the dance floor right away.

Since then, he has been standing behind his musicbox at all kinds of different events. But he prefers to make music at his own parties, such as “Boogie & Swing Nights” or his evening of classic social dances, called “Dance into the Night”. Especially with lots of contact to the audience and his cool and easy presentation,  DJ “H. Musicbox“ manages to liven up an event with only music coming from a CD.

10Inch WonderBoy (Regensburg, Germany)

DJ 10Inch WonderboyPeter Naumann has totally committed himself to the music of the 40s and 50s. His music covers Boogie Woogie, Doo-Wop, Jive, and Swing as well as Rockabilly and fifties Rock ’n’ Roll, but he also doesn’t forget to include today’s authentic-sounding bands in his sets.

He began in 1999 to be a DJ at various small parties in Regensburg. The hot rhythms captivated him more and more. As a result, his record collection grew ever larger and his quest for good, old music ever more intensive. There was a small Rock ’n’ Roll scene in Regensburg at the time, which used to gather at the slick 50 Live Club to hear good ol’ Rock ’n’ Roll; but he wanted to convert even more people to the music.

In 2001, he put on his first concert with Mars Attacks at the Hinterhaus. Peter deejayed in various clubs and bars. His first big gig was at the Kolpinghaus (Dance Festival) in 2003. Then, from November he spun the discs every Friday at a Record Hop in Kullman’s Diner.

In 2004 his first big foreign gig saw him in Senigallia for the Summer Jamboree, where he received positive feedback. In June this year, he started the Rock ’n’ Roll Club in suite15 together with DJ Dynamike - every Thursday, with a large crowd of regulars.

Peter regularly organizes dance events in Regensburg with top bands. He can be proud of the fact that he was the first to bring Stompy Jones (Swing Session) over to Germany.

Siegi Spiel (Tuntenhausen, Germany)

Dj Siegi SpielIt all began in the early 80s with a Rock ’n’ Roll course in Rosenheim and the first dance steps in Munich’s legendary Popclub. After a number of private Boogie parties he became (mid-80s) the house DJ” at the Rosenheim Rock ’n’ Roll Club. From 1990 he organized his own Boogie dance events, providing the requisite dance music at the same time. Since then he has been busy as a DJ at competitions and Boogie parties in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

As well as collecting records and CDs, he also moved into business with Boogie and Lindy Hop music.
