All venues except Max-Emanuel-Brauerei (Sunday night) are in the center of Munich very close to the Deutsches Theater /Central Station (Hauptbahnhof). There’s a large number of hotels close by. Early birds generally get cheaper prices. Good offers can be found at www.hotels.de and www.muenchen.citysam.de. Real cheap accommodation in groups (up to 8 people a room) is offered by www.easypalace.de.
If you ask for it, we’ll surely see if something can be arranged but unfortunately we can’t guarantee any private accommodation.
The central station is close by the venues (approx. 5 minutes walking). The airport is in the very north of Munich. Suburban trains (S-Bahn, S8 and S1) leave every 20 minutes and take you directly to the city center (40-45 minutes).
Most venues are close by the Deutsches Theater and distances can be walked. On Sunday night a tram / underground (5 minutes) or taxi (approx. 10 Euros) takes you easily to Max-Emanuel-Brauerei. You can also try to share a car with other participants.
In Winter temperatures range from 15°C to minus 10°C. So it can be sunny and warm or cold with snowstorms. So be prepared and pack some warm clothes and shoes as well. Last year we had prespring weather with a lot of sunshine.
The price increase was inevitable: The biggest problem was the Deutsches Theater as they have new fire protection regulations valid since 01.01.08 that say that only 850 tickets can be sold. (Last year the Theater still allowed 2400 tickets to be sold). And as if that was not enough, Germany also had an increase of sales tax from 16% to 19%. Rents for the studios, too, have increased as have the costs for trainers. So we couldn’t keep the former prices. But we managed to combine our high quality standards with prices which surely have become higher but which are still cheaper than other camps. So we can happily say that the Rock that Swing Festival still is among the cheapest of all camps.
We already have participants at the RTSF 2008 that come from the following countries: Australia, Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Croatia, Norway, Austria, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovenia, Spain, Hungary and the USA.
You can film without tripods during the evening events. We’ll inform you, if some of the bands don’t like to be recorded. Our sold DVDs of the evening events will contain impressions, performances, championships and jams. So, why not enjoy the ball without heavy arms from the camera and purchase a DVD set afterwards.
So far trainers weren't allowed to be filmed in class. This regulation will be – slightly – altered. If you purchase a Camp DVD you can film an abstract at the end of a class. So you can continue practicing the material you learned right after the festival and get additional material with the Camp DVDs that hold all classes even the ones you couldn’t attend. As Camp DVDs are sold at cost price this is a fair solution for everyone. Get an ID at the Check-In if you want to make record the summary at the end of class.
Yes, there will be a video of the RTSF 2008. We have engaged a new video team as we haven’t been lucky with the last two. This team is internationally known as experts and we hope that they’ll do a great job at our festival, too.
There will be two packages. The camp package holds the abstracts of the classes and the evening package holds impressions, performances, championships and jams. Each package will probably contain two or three DVDs.
The new video team aims at the first week after the camp for the master DVDs. The takes will be cut right at the venues. So the DVDs should be ready for posting 3 to 4 weeks after the camp.
The Camp DVDs will have short abstracts of all classes if possible.
The Festival DVDs can be ordered at the Festival or afterwards at our Rock that Swing and World of Swing websites. Prices aren’t ready yet but the DVDs surely will be sold at cost price.
Because of technical problems which are not our fault but the problems of the production company the release has been postponed over and over again. But our tireless lawyer managed a spark of hope that the DVDs of the last two years will be ready at the start of the Festival 2008. So they can be purchased there or at the Rock That Swing or World of Swing website.
There’s a new non-smoking-law in Bavaria. Since 01.01.08 smoking is not allowed in restaurants, cafés, pubs and venues. So the Festival will be non-smoking.
Generally you need permission for handing out flyers inside the venues. Those permissions - if available - can be purchased at the WOS. On Friday, Sunday and Monday there will be an extra table where you can put your flyers.
We hope so! We're facing problems with room because of the renovations at the venue but we’re eagerly searching the surounding buildings for a suitable place. We’ll let you know as soon as we’ve got it.
”Fasching” means carnival and has a long tradition in Germany. You can compare it to Halloween in the USA, but it’s supposed to be funny not scary. In Germany’s North West it is celebrated very excessively (Cologne, Mainz, etc.). The RTSF is taking place right at the big final weekend of “Fasching”. That means highly probably you’ll meet strange looking people wearing all kinds of masquerade and behaving a bit weird in the city centre. If you like that you can start on Thursday. That day is also known as “Unsinniger Donnerstag” or “Altweiberfasching” (be careful guys, ladies are allowed to cut your ties that day, honestly) or you stay till Tuesday, “Faschingsdienstag” , with many celebrations in the city, a lot of dancing and parties all over Munich. If you like carnival processions, Monday “Rosenmontag” is your day. You won’t find any carnival parties at the RTSF except our Hawaiian Night on Sunday, where you should be dressed in Hawaii fashion.
All tickets for the dance nights of the RTSF can be purchased at the Rock That Swing Festival Website (www.rockthatswing.com) and at the booking agency München Ticket (www.muenchenticket.de). Tickets for the Jamboree Ball on Saturday night can also be bought directly at the Deutsches Theater (www.deutsches-theater.de). Please consider that all ticket agencys have a limited contingent of tickets. So maybe one ticket agency has run out of tickets while others are still selling. If there are any tickets left, they will be sold at the respective dance night.
All tickets you have ordered directly at the Rock That Swing website can be picked up at the Check-In of the Dance Camp or at the RTSF box office at the dance nights. Tickets you have purchased at München Ticket and at Deutsches Theater, can be picked up at the specified places.
Any left over tickets will be sold at the box offices of each dance night. You won’t have to pay any fee at the box offices. You can look up the availability of tickets at www.rockthatswing.com.
No, ticket and camp orders are binding and oblige payment. The German Remote Purchase law allows in general a two week revocation period, but according to § 312b Paragraph 3 Nr. 6 BGB it is not applicable for ticket sales or camp bookings. (Dance Camp registrations can be cancelled in case of illness by presenting an attest until 31st of January, 2008. In this case a cancellation fee of 10 Euro per participant is payable.)
There’s only one dance night with numbered seats – the Jamboree Bal at the Deutsches Theater. For all the other dance nights there’s just one category of price which means you have a free choice of seating. But be early, the number of seats is limited. So early birds get the best seats.
There’s only a price reduction for evening packages (all 4 dance nights). If you order an evening package through 31.12.07 there won’t be any fees. Since 01.01.08 fees can only be saved if you purchase 6 evening packages at once. Moreover there’s a reduction of 10 Euros if you order the all in one – package ( 4 dance nights + minimum 3 days dance camp).
You can have dinner at all the dance nights. Kolpinghaus offers a separate restaurant on first floor where you can have dinner à la carte. In the ballroom there’ll be a short menu only with a small choice of dishes.
Certainly not. All venues have their own gastronomy. Don’t be impolite!
Yes and no. As the Jamboree Ball is located in a ballroom you should be dressed accordingly and leave your trainers at home. Otherwise you might not be allowed to get in. We want to invite you to accomplish the atmosphere of the dance nights with a stylish outfit, best would be 40s or 50s style of course. Sunday night is our Hawaiian Night. It would be simply terrific, to see you in a thematic outfit.
All contests of the RTSF are open and each and everybody who’d like to can take part. You can list your name right at the venue at the specific night.
You can tape at any dance night. We’ll tell you if a band doesn’t like that. More information about filming and about the festival DVDs can be found in the "In General" section
There will be classes in Boogie Woogie, Lindy Hop, Balboa, Shag, Charleston and acrobatics. Additionally there will be special lessons about specific topics or about other dances like Salsa, West Coast Swing, Haka and Hula.
Sure. There are specific beginners classes in Boogie Woogie, Lindy Hop, Balboa and Shag, which have three single classes that instruct you step by step. In those classes you’ll learn the necessary footwork and basic elements for each dance. Those are essential to continue with a beginners-intermediate class.
Talking about the main dances Boogie Woogie, Lindy Hop and Balboa there are four categories: beginner, beginner-intermediate, Intermediate, Advanced). Please consider the description of each class. In general:
a) No experience necessary for beginner classes.
b) Basics are necessary for beginner-intermediate classes (The exception is Shag where in the first lesson the basics are refreshed)
c) You should have a good dance experience for the intermediate classes, be abolutely fit in the basics, variations, lead & follow and can dance to slow and fast music.
d) For an advanced class you should be dancing for a while on a high level or having joined several championships. Your steps and variations should be routine and you should be ready for new challenges. You can dance to slow and quick music as well. You’d like to improve the quality of your moves, your musicality and the finesse of your leading.
Each class has its own topic and has a beginning and an end. Only the beginner classes build up on each other, i.e. if you don’t have any experience, you can’t start at a beginner track in the second or third lesson.
Yes, you can. Only exception: acrobatic classes. Here participation without a partner isn’t possible.
Trainers will ask you to rotate partners. Generally, the rotation only has advantages as you get more flexible, you improve your leading & following, others will give you inspiration, you learn from each other and you get to know other people (exception: acrobatic classes).
We strongly recommend changing partners. But of course we understand, if partners want to spend their time with each other during the camp. Trainers will then split all participants in two groups, so non-rotating- partners won’t stop the rotation of the others. But if there are problems and traffic jams, e.g. if there are many more ladies than gentlemen or vice versa, we must ask all participants to rotate.
Yes, you can. Classes can be chosen freely on the spot. But consider the level you’re choosing. Your choice of classes at the enrolment is just a help for our organization of rooms.
Each acrobatic class is limited to 15 couples. The enrolment will be done on each morning at approx. 9:30 at our Check-In counter.
Train the trainer classes concentrate on “how” not on “what”. They are specifically outlined to train trainers, but basically everybody who is interested can participate. However elementary English knowledge is necessary to understand trainers and to be able to follow theoretical lessons and thematic discussions.
Foreign trainers will teach in English. Depending on the nationalities of participants German trainers will also speak German if necassary. Some trainers may speak more languages.
Yes, you can book single days.
No, the smallest booking unit is a day.
Yes, you can even enroll at the Check-In.
Yes, you can. One more day costs 65 Euros, a third and fourth 40 euros each.
No, it isn’t. We’ll treat it like a regular day.
No, you can’t.
Yes, there is. If you enroll a group of 10 people or more, you’ll get a reduction of 5%, for 20 or more there will be a reduction of 10% for each booking.
Yes, there is. Pupils, students, apprentices, and recruits will get a price reduction of 15% (ID necessary). Unfortunately there’s no price reduction for disabled people.

The Check-In is located together with the Vintage Market at Schwanthalerstr. 39 on the second floor. (ca. 150 m right of the Deutsches Theater - mind the signs). Check-in for the Dance Camp and ticket collection is possible during the day at the Check-In-Desk and in the evening at the RTSF box offices. The Check-In times are:

There will most likely be a catering of sandwiches, fruit, sweets and soft drinks in some studios. Some studios even have their own bars where you can buy coffee (eg. Tanzschule Matschek, Que Tango, etc.). More information will be in your participation letters that you will receive at check-in.
In general you can. But take care to take left overs and rubbish with you. We need to leave studios in a properly cleaned state.
