Dear Balboa lovers,
our 3rd
MUNICH BALBOA WEEKEND is coming close. A whole weekend
dedicated to Balboa / Bal-Swing only. We have invited two very
charming, wellknown, and popular teacher couples from the USA, and
an Oldtime dance legend to help you discovering new secrets of
Balboa:
Joel & Alison
aus San Diego
Mickey & Kelly aus New York
Ray Cunningham aus Los Angeles
Ray will show
you one of his specialities:
"Laminu" (Slow Balboa). Some of you may
have been introduced to the Laminu already by Joel & Alison at the Rock That Swing Festival 2007.
Learn by the Master himself.
Joel & Alison
are the organizers of the world-known "Balboa Rendezvous" which is
held in San Diego / Balboa Island and attended by many Oldtime
dancers and dancers from all over the globe. Mickey & Kelly are the
shooting stars in the Balbo scene. They have won the International
Balboa Championships twice in a row and are one of the most
frequented teachers right now.
The weekend
workshop will cover all levels from beginner to advanced Balboa dancers.
We will have a special 3 hour beginner track which covers all the
basic requirements for the next classes. Any new beginner but also
Balboa dancers who started recently Balboa can join these track (see
level description). If you want to prepare yourself beforehand a bit,
we can recommend you our instructional
Balboa videos
to learn from.

The studio has an amazing wooden floor - perfect for Balboa!

Joel & Alison
(USA) |
Since
their marriage and move to San Diego, CA in mid-2002, Joel
and Alison Plys have made quite a name for themselves. They
have a high quality, energetic approach to the dance which
makes every lesson with them a blast!
Joel & Alison’s down
to earth, enthusiastic attitudes are contagious and offer a
very personal learning experience. Joel & Alison have a full
knowledge and understanding of various styles that they
share in their instruction. They encourage students to study
and be open to “differences” so that they can make the dance
their own.
Joel & Alison embody these qualities in their instruction
and their dancing while remembering the true reason they
dance - for FUN!
Joel co-created the
popular All Balboa Weekend in Cleveland, OH - the first ever
ALL Balboa event. Joel & Alison are the creators of the
Balboa Rendezvous - simply the greatest gathering for
Balboa instructors and dancers. They are huge supporters of
communities and promoters working together to help each
scene prosper and grow.
Their emphasis is on
quality instruction versus competitive placement, yet they
have their share of successes. They have competed and placed
multiple times at the following events:
-
American Lindy
Hop Championships (ALHC)
-
American Classic
Balboa Championship (ACBC at the All Balboa Weekend in
Cleveland)
-
National
Jitterbug Championships (NJC)

Mickey &
Kelly (USA) |
|
A
native of Pasadena California, Mickey
Fortanasce was introduced to Balboa early on
in his dance-life. His captivation for this
particular dance resulted in his subsequent
efforts to learn as much as possible about
Balboa. For the last eight years, Mickey has
lived in New York where he has been working to
bring a greater love and appreciation for Balboa
to the city.
Originally
from Tennessee, Kelly Arsenault has been
a dancer for the majority of her life. She has
participated in ballet, jazz, and modern dance.
In 2003, Kelly moved to NYC and teamed up with
Mickey soon afterwards.
Together they
are now nationally recognized teachers and
competitors, placing in both Lindy Hop and
Balboa. Most recent winnings include a repeat
victory at the International Balboa
Championships, held at the Balboa Rendezvous.
Their commitment to fostering Balboa in New York
also led them to establish the city's first and
only regularly occurring social dance event
devoted to fast footed dancers of all types,
known as White Heat.

Ray
Cunningham (USA) |
Ray Cunningham is from Los Angeles and an Oldtime dancer
of the late 40's. He is a very fine dancer with a great humor
and still in very good shape. Ray is well-known for his great
timing. One of his specialties is the slow form of
Balboa: the LAMINU.
Since he showed the Laminu two years
ago at the Balboa Rendezvous, people got crazy for that dance
and he's travelling around the world to teach it to the dance
crowd. It will be his first visit to Germany. He is very excited
about Germany and especially about Munich. So we are very
pleased to welcome Ray to our Munich Balboa Weekend.
Ray will show you the secrets of the
Laminu in a few lessons. Don't miss his classes and don't miss
to meet him!

Classes |
|
Each class is 60 minutes long. Please take
your own Balboa dance level into account and join the level
where you fit in. It's in your own interest and also in the interest
of the other participants. The classes will increase in difficulty.
We have no special class themes this time - except the beginner
track - so the teachers can address the material to the needs of the
classes. They will cover all important aspects like footwork, turns,
figures, rhythm, variations ... Videotaping is not allowed during
the classes. The teachers will summarize the class material at the
end of the lessons for videotaping.
Beginner track: NO
dance knowledge required! We will start right from the beginning.
The beginner track is also recommended to the dancers who want to
refresh their Balboa basic knowledge or to see how other teachers
are teaching the basics. Each teacher has it's own preference and
way and it's always a good inspiration and new experience.
Beginners/Intermediate:
You have danced already some Balboa and know a few basic figures.
You are not so sure in them yet, but you want to improve your Balboa
skills and learn new figures and steps.
Intermediate: Minimum
requirement for the intermediate classes are the Basics,
Come Around (Break Turn) and some basic figures as Paddles, Lollies, Throw Out, Inside
Turn.
Intermediate/Advanced: This is the intermediate stage between
the intermediate and the advanced level.
Advanced: To join this class level you should dance Balboa / Bal-Swing
on a higher level already for quite a while on a regular base.
Basic variations and figures as Lollies, Inside-/Outside Turn, Throw Out, Come Around,
Adlibs etc. should be absolutely NO problem for you.
You know your steps and figures very
well and are prepared and up for new challenges.
Registration:
The workshop can only be booked for one or two days -
except the beginner track. You will get in the advantage of
reduced prices if you book two days of participation
or if you are a student (bring your ID with you). You can find the price structure underneath the time table.
If you are quick and register before October 26th, 2007, you will save even more money with the Early Bird
Special.
Single people
can register, too. If you have the possibility to bring a partner
with you, than it will be an advantage for the whole class, because
it will be a more balanced situation between leaders and followers.
Make sure
that you bring shoes with a smooth sole (leather soles,
suede leather etc.) with you. Rubber soles are not good for Balboa.

Balboa & Swing Party
19:00-20:00 h - Balboa Introduction class w/ Marcus &
Bärbl
20:00 h – Dance Party w/ DJ Music
Admission: 5 Euro
Gaststätte Hirschau
Gyßlingstr. 15
80805 München

DANCE OPTIONS:
Friday: We are starting already on Friday night with the Balboa
& Swing Party in the beautiful rooms of the Gaststätte
Hirschau (also known from the Munich Lindy Exchange) in the
idyllic English Garden. It's a great opportunity to meet the
teachers and students already and to get in
the right mood for the weekend. If you are brave enough you can
ask the teachers for a dance. The locations has a very smooth
floor and it's perfect for Balboa. We hope you all will come and have
a great time there.
It's
getting more and more complicated to find locations for swing
dancing as most of the swing dancers don't consume enough to
make it profitable for the owners. So come earlier and use the
opportunity to dine there with other swing friends in a relaxed
atmosphere. They serve also light dishes so the food won't
bother you during dancing.
Saturday: As we didn't want to split up the dance
community for two events, we decided to go to the Schrannenhalle
where they offer 50's live music with Marty & His Rockin’
Comets. In the breaks the DJ will keep us dancing with
swinging music.
Sunday: If you are still fit you can choose between two
dance places: 50's Record Hop at Max-Emanuel-Brauerei (almost
smoke-free and a new and good dance floor) or Swing on Sunday
at Salon Erna (smoky and not the best dance floor -
especially not for Balboa).
Have
also a look at
our GENERAL EVENT CALENDAR! if
there is something else you would like to go to.
We hope to see you all
there!
